2024 ASCENSION SETON AUSTIN MARATHON & HALF ELITE FIELD

The Ascension Seton Austin Marathon will take place on Sunday, February 18, 2024. The event is USATF-sanctioned and certified and features some of the best views Austin has to offer. The course is well-supported with 22 aid stations, 26 bands, hundreds of amazing signs, and thousands of cheering spectators. Historically, temperatures in mid-February range from a high of 66 degrees to a low of 42 degrees. The event annually attracts runners from all 50 states and 35+ countries around the world.

Just as my manager Silvester Mokamba advises me, be well hydrated on the course, run your race and run smart. Keep a close distance with your opponents and if possible take off early to avoid a last minute search which may cost you especially if you don’t have a strong finish.

Don’t do anything crazy on race day! Feels like everyone says it, but if you’ve trained for this then do exactly what you did to prepare for the day. As the man Kevin Sullivan told me before every race, “You’ve done the hard work already: training. Now, you get to go out and do what you love most.”

I was hoping to go sub-2:30 at Houston, but I wasn’t able to make it there due to weather in Colorado. Since then, I’ve tried to prime my training, but a 50k let down last weekend at Arches 50k, has me still recovering. If I can cross the finish sub-2:40, I’d count that as a win…considering that I have another trail 50k this weekend before the race!

A tall beer and some pizza!

Race day tip for other runners:
Go to bed extremely early. Like embarrassingly early. Even if you get up in the middle of the night and toss-and-turn for several, it’s worth the full rest if you can get it.

Prepare all your race gear the night before. Nothing is more challenging than trying to figure out your race kit on the morning of the event. Additionally, on race day, stick to the same foods you’ve been eating throughout your training cycle. There’s no magic berry that will grant you superpowers on race day; if anything, it might irritate your stomach!

Don’t panic in the first 3 miles if your splits are slower than planned – you’ll make up for it in miles 3-6 which are downhill. Garmin PacePro can be useful for a course like Austin.
