The Best Post-Run Swimming Holes in Austin

in Blog post
There’s a reason Austin runners don’t just run. They run to something. In a city built on springs, creeks, and limestone pools, your cooldown doesn’t have to be a foam roller in your living room. It can be a plunge into 68-degree spring-fed water with the Texas sun on your shoulders and a cold drink waiting on the bank.

Whether you’re training for the Austin Marathon, grinding out summer miles, or wrapping up a Saturday long run with friends, Austin’s swimming holes are the ultimate post-run reward. Here are the best cool down spots Austin has to offer.

Swimmers enjoying clear green spring with treesBarton Springs Pool: The Classic

No list of Austin swimming holes starts anywhere else. Barton Springs Pool sits inside Zilker Park, fed directly by underground springs from the Edwards Aquifer, which means it stays a refreshing 68°F year-round regardless of what the Texas heat is doing above ground.

For runners, it’s perfectly positioned. The Barton Springs running route along the Lady Bird Lake Trail passes right by Zilker, making a post-run dip almost too easy to skip. The pool stretches 200 yards, deep enough for real swimming (up to 18 feet in spots), and is surrounded by grassy hills for stretching out while you air-dry.

Runner tip: Admission is $5 for Austin residents and $9 for non-residents. Go before 9 AM or after 6 PM to beat the crowds, especially on summer weekends. Your legs will thank you for the cold-water immersion.

Large outdoor swimming pool with lane markers, surrounded by trees and people swimming and relaxing—perfect for a post-run dip in the heart of Austin. Blue sky with scattered clouds overhead, metal railings leading into the pool in the foreground, evoking the classic atmosphere of Austin’s beloved swimming holes. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KDeep Eddy Pool: The Local Favorite

Deep Eddy Pool Austin is a spot that every local runner swears by but most visitors overlook. Built in 1915, it’s the oldest swimming pool in Texas, spring-fed with no chlorine, and tucked quietly into Eilers Park just off Lake Austin Boulevard.

It’s smaller and calmer than Barton Springs, with dedicated lap lanes and a shallow recreation pool. The shaded lawn under mature live oaks is the kind of place you’ll lay down after a run and not want to leave. The water stays between 65–75°F, which hits differently when your core temp is up from a hard training session.

Runner tip: Deep Eddy is closed every Tuesday for cleaning. Weekday mornings or late afternoons are the sweet spot for a quiet soak. Same pricing as Barton Springs ($5 resident / $9 non-resident). If you’re training through the summer, a $190 annual season pass covers every City of Austin pool.

A calm river near Austin reflects trees and a hillside under a clear blue sky, with greenery on both riverbanks and a few rocks visible in the water—one of the inviting post-run swimming holes perfect for relaxation. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KBarton Creek Greenbelt: Run and Swim in One Trip

The Barton Creek Greenbelt is Austin’s backyard playground, and it’s one of the few places where your run is the route to the swimming hole. The 13-mile trail system follows Barton Creek through shaded limestone canyons, and when the creek is flowing, the swimming holes are some of the best in Central Texas.

Twin Falls is the crowd favorite: a short half-mile hike from the trailhead leads to a beautiful two-tier waterfall that cascades into a deep pool. It’s family-friendly, photogenic, and the spring-fed water is cold enough to feel like an ice bath for your legs.

Sculpture Falls sits about a mile further along the trail and rewards the extra effort with a more secluded vibe. The water flows over broad limestone shelves in a series of small cascades, and the crowd thins out enough that it feels like your own private recovery pool.

Campbell’s Hole is the easiest to reach: a flat 10-minute walk from the Spyglass trailhead. It’s the most reliable swimming hole when water levels are low, and it’s a go-to for runners who want a quick cool-down without committing to a longer hike.

Runner tip: Water levels on the Greenbelt depend on recent rainfall. Check flow conditions at austintexas.gov before you go. Spring (March through May) is prime time. When the creek runs dry in summer, skip the Greenbelt and head straight for the spring-fed pools.

Small waterfall flows over a flat rock ledge into a calm river surrounded by green trees and bushes under a clear blue sky—one of Austin’s favorite post-run swimming holes. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KMcKinney Falls State Park: The Trail Runner’s Reward

If you’re already out on trails, McKinney Falls State Park offers a two-in-one: miles of great running and two limestone waterfalls with natural swimming holes at the end. Upper McKinney Falls features a wide cascade and calm swimming area, while Lower Falls offers a quieter, more secluded dip.

It’s just minutes from downtown Austin, and the 2.8-mile Onion Creek Trail loop is a solid run on its own before you cool off beneath the falls.

Runner tip: Arrive before 9 AM on weekends since the park fills to capacity in summer. Wear shoes with good grip because limestone gets slippery. Entry is $6 per person (Texas State Parks fee).

People swim and float on inner tubes in a clear, tree-lined river under bright green foliage. Some climb or jump from trees, enjoying one of Austin’s best post-run swimming holes and soaking up a sunny day in nature. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KBlue Hole Regional Park: Worth the Drive

About 45 minutes south in Wimberley, Blue Hole is the swimming hole that looks like it was photoshopped into reality. Crystal-clear water holds steady at 75°F, ancient cypress trees drape over the banks, and the whole scene feels like a reward for putting in the miles.

It’s further out, but it makes for an incredible long-run destination day. Run in the morning, drive to Wimberley, and recover in style.

Runner tip: Blue Hole requires reservations in advance, especially May through September. Book early or miss out.

FAQ: Post-Run Swimming in Austin

What are the best cool down spots in Austin after a run?
The top cool down spots Austin runners love are Barton Springs Pool (68°F year-round, right off the Lady Bird Lake trail), Deep Eddy Pool (oldest spring-fed pool in Texas, great for lap swimming), and the Barton Creek Greenbelt swimming holes (Twin Falls, Sculpture Falls, and Campbell’s Hole). All offer cold-water immersion that doubles as natural recovery.

Is Barton Springs Pool good for post-run recovery?
Absolutely. The spring-fed water stays at 68°F year-round, which is ideal cold-water immersion temperature for muscle recovery. The Barton Springs running route along Lady Bird Lake makes it easy to finish your run right at the pool entrance in Zilker Park.

Is Deep Eddy Pool open year-round?
Deep Eddy Pool Austin operates seasonally with spring-fed water between 65–75°F. It’s closed Tuesdays for cleaning. Admission is $5 for Austin residents and $9 for non-residents.

Can you swim at the Barton Creek Greenbelt?
Yes, when the creek is flowing. Twin Falls, Sculpture Falls, and Campbell’s Hole are the most popular swimming holes. Water levels depend on recent rainfall, so check conditions before making the trip. Spring (March through May) is the best season for full, flowing water.

What swimming holes are closest to the Austin Marathon course?
Barton Springs Pool and Deep Eddy Pool are both within minutes of the Austin Marathon course. After crossing the finish line near the Texas State Capitol, runners can head to either spring-fed pool for an unbeatable post-race cool-down.

Are Austin swimming holes free?
The Barton Creek Greenbelt swimming holes are free. Barton Springs Pool and Deep Eddy Pool charge $5 for Austin residents and $9 for non-residents. McKinney Falls State Park charges a $6 entry fee. Blue Hole in Wimberley requires a reservation and has a small admission fee.

When is the best time to swim at Austin’s swimming holes?
Spring (March through May) offers the best combination of flowing water, comfortable temps, and manageable crowds. For the spring-fed pools (Barton Springs and Deep Eddy), year-round is great, but weekday mornings and late afternoons are the least crowded times.
