Master the Trail: A Runner’s Guide to the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail

in Blog post

Some runs are about the workout. Others remind you why you started running in the first place. With lake views, downtown scenery, and fellow runners sharing the path, the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail makes room for both.

The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail is an approximately 10-mile loop around Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. Often called the Town Lake running trail or simply “the Trail,” it offers shorter routes, waterfront out-and-backs, and longer outings for runners building toward the Austin Marathon.

You don’t need to tackle the entire loop to enjoy it. Here’s how to choose your route, plan your stops, and make these miles work for your training.

Two people wearing helmets ride bicycles on a sunlit path surrounded by trees. One smiles in front, while the other rides slightly behind along metal railings—an inviting scene found on top running trails and Austin running routes. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KHow Many Miles Is the Lady Bird Lake Loop?

The full Butler Trail is commonly described as a 10-mile loop, but your actual distance depends on the route, bridge crossings, access points, and detours you use.

There’s a reason older maps and your running watch may disagree. According to The Trail Conservancy’s trail FAQs, the Trail was remeasured in fall 2025 to account for the Lakefront Trail at Holly Shores and the Wishbone pedestrian bridge near Longhorn Dam. Updated distances appear on trail maps at full-mile markers and welcome signs.

Use the current official map to plan your route rather than treating every “10-mile loop” description as an exact measurement. GPS readings can vary, too.

For a shorter run, use a mapped bridge-to-bridge loop or an out-and-back that lets you turn around halfway through your planned distance.

A boardwalk curves along a lakeshore near grassy lawns, trees, and townhouses—an inviting route for East Austin running enthusiasts or members of local running clubs. Colorful kayaks and paddleboards are visible on the grass, with apartment buildings in the background under a clear blue sky. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KWhich Butler Trail Route Should You Run?

The best route is the one that matches today’s workout, not the one that looks most impressive on your training app.

For Beginners: A Short Out-and-Back

Start at Auditorium Shores and follow the south-shore trail west toward Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge. Turn around when you reach half your planned time or distance.

For a 20-minute outing, that could mean 10 minutes out and 10 minutes back at an easy effort. Walking breaks count. This approach keeps your first visit simple without committing you to a full lake loop.

For Skyline Views: The Boardwalk

Enter at International Shores Park, 1820 S. Lakeshore Boulevard, and head west along the Boardwalk toward downtown.

For an approximately 3-mile outing, turn around at 1.5 miles, continuing onto the connecting trail as needed. That’s a suggested out-and-back, not a separately marked 3-mile course.

The Boardwalk offers open-water views and designated viewing areas where you can pause without blocking the path. Expect exposed sections, and bring sun protection.

For a Western Loop: Pfluger to MoPac

Start at Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, follow the south-shore trail west, cross at the MoPac pedestrian crossing, and return east along the north shore before crossing Pfluger again.

This route combines lake scenery with tree-lined stretches. Check the official trail map for current mileage and access before heading out.

For a Longer Run: The Full Lake Loop

When your training plan calls for it, the full loop offers a longer outing with changing scenery around Lady Bird Lake.

Plan your route and water stops in advance. If you need more or fewer miles than the mapped loop provides, choose a measured extension or a shorter route rather than improvising when you’re already tired.

A blue parking sign with a white “P” and a right-pointing arrow, photographed against a clear blue sky, marks convenient access to the Ann and Roy Butler Trail—a favorite in every runner’s guide and one of Austin’s most scenic hike-and-bike trails. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KWhere Can You Park and Find Water or Restrooms?

There isn’t one required starting point. The Trail Conservancy lists parking options around the lake, including the Austin High Boat Launch, Festival Beach Boat Ramp, and areas near Zilker.

Check posted fees, time limits, and access restrictions wherever you park. An early start does not automatically mean free parking.

The Conservancy’s maps also identify drinking fountains and restrooms. Restroom locations include Johnson Creek Trailhead, Auditorium Shores, and International Shores.

Before a longer run, identify a restroom near your start and potential refill points along your route. Carry water when conditions or distance call for it, and don’t make a working fountain your only hydration plan.

Two people jogging together in a park, both smiling. The woman wears a white top and teal leggings, while the man wears a dark athletic shirt and shorts. Trees and a path with green foliage are visible in the background, reminiscent of the scenic Ann and Roy Butler Trail featured in many Runner’s Guides. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KWhat Should Runners Know About Trail Conditions?

The Butler Trail includes crushed-granite sections and paved surfaces, with concrete along the Boardwalk. Pay attention when surfaces change, especially after rain.

It’s also shared public space. Runners, walkers, cyclists, families, and people with dogs all use the same route. A little awareness makes everyone’s miles better.

  • Keep right and leave room for others to pass.
  • Pass on the left when clear, giving a friendly verbal heads-up.
  • Run single file when the trail narrows or gets crowded.
  • Step completely off the travel path before stopping.
  • Keep dogs leashed and avoid stretching the leash across the trail.
  • Slow down around blind corners, busy crossings, and construction areas.

Save all-out intervals for a setting where you can run fast without weaving through other trail users.

The clock face is white with black numbers, and the image is slightly tilted—serving as a timely reminder about running safety and how important it is to train safely, especially when every minute counts. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KWhat Time Should You Run the Butler Trail?

Early morning can help you avoid stronger sun and higher afternoon temperatures, but Austin mornings can still be hot and humid. Check the forecast and heat alerts, then adjust your distance and effort.

The City of Austin lists Boardwalk hours as 5 a.m. to midnight, with a curfew between midnight and 5 a.m. Follow posted hours and temporary restrictions at your chosen access point.

Not every trail segment is illuminated. Bring a light if your run begins before sunrise or continues after dark.

On hot days, let effort guide your pace. Shortening a run is a better training decision than forcing the mileage when conditions are working against you.

Are There Closures or Detours on the Trail?

Construction can affect both the route and your access point. Check The Trail Conservancy’s current detours before every unfamiliar outing, especially near I-35 and the downtown north shore.

Follow on-site signs rather than an older saved route. Allow extra time, and don’t enter a closed section to keep your watch mileage tidy.

A smiling marathon finisher poses with a large bat mascot in an "Austin Marathon" shirt, with the Texas State Capitol building in the background—a reminder to celebrate achievements even when motivation fades. The runner proudly wears a medal and race gear. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KHow Does the Trail Fit Into Austin Marathon Training?

The Butler Trail is a useful place to build consistency through easy runs, run-walk sessions, and longer aerobic outings. Choose distances that fit your current training plan and recovery needs.

Use longer runs to practice the habits you want on race day: starting under control, carrying your planned fuel, and testing familiar gear.

But don’t make one route your entire training program. Mix in road running and appropriate hill work so you’re preparing for more than a familiar lakeside loop.

Need company for those miles? Explore RUN AUSTIN’s running groups and training resources to find a community that fits your pace and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Town Lake running trail the same as the Butler Trail?

Yes. “Town Lake running trail” is a common name for the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake in Austin.

Do you have to run the entire Lady Bird Lake loop?

No. Shorter bridge-to-bridge routes and out-and-backs let you choose a distance that fits your fitness and schedule. Check the current map before choosing a loop.

Is the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail beginner-friendly?

Yes, especially when you choose a short route and allow walking breaks. Beginners don’t need to complete the full loop, and an out-and-back makes it easier to adjust the outing.

Are there water fountains and bathrooms on the trail?

Yes. The Trail Conservancy’s map shows drinking fountains and restrooms around the trail. Check locations in advance and carry water rather than relying entirely on amenities being available.

Can you run on the Lady Bird Lake Boardwalk before sunrise?

Yes, provided it is after the Boardwalk’s 5 a.m. opening time and no temporary closure applies. Bring a light for connecting trail sections and follow posted restrictions.

Make These Miles Your Own

Among Austin running paths, the Butler Trail offers a memorable combination: lakefront scenery, flexible routes, and a community that keeps showing up.

Start with the distance that works for you. Learn a favorite stretch. Come back when your training calls for more.

Whether today brings a relaxed run-walk or a longer training session, those consistent miles can help move you toward your next starting line. Choose your next goal at the Austin Marathon, and make the Trail part of the journey.
