What to Do Now So February Feels Easy Later

in Blog post

The 2027 Ascension Seton Austin Marathon is February 14, and most runners won’t start thinking about it until November. By then, you’ll already have a base that makes 26.2 (or 13.1) feel inevitable. Here’s your late-summer game plan.

August and September are for easy, consistent mileage. You’re not training for speed yet; you’re building the engine that makes your 16-week plan actually work.

  • Run 3–4 days per week at a conversational pace
  • Add 10% weekly mileage max to avoid injury
  • Cross-train 1–2 days with cycling, swimming, or strength work

This is the work nobody sees but everyone benefits from on race morning.

A large group of marathon runners, wearing race bibs and colorful athletic gear, smile, wave, and raise their hands as they gather at the starting line in a city street—perfectly embodying the excitement and disciplined time management that goes into successful February planning. Prices go up as race day gets closer. If you haven’t registered yet, lock in your spot now before the next price tier kicks in. The marathon, half marathon, and 5K are all open.

Texas summer heat is brutal, but it’s also the best forced-hydration training you’ll ever get. Use August to:

  • Practice your race-day fueling strategy on long runs
  • Test gels, chews, or real food to see what your stomach tolerates
  • Nail your electrolyte balance so you don’t cramp on race day

A clipboard with a “TRAINING PLAN” form, a black pen, a pink 1kg dumbbell, and a measuring tape—essential tools for effective time management and February planning—all thoughtfully arranged on a wooden surface. Austin Marathon Half Marathon & 5KPick a Training Plan Before October

Whether you’re targeting a PR or just finishing, commit to a structured plan by early October. That gives you a full 16–18 week build leading into February 14. Options include:

  1. Beginner (first marathon/half): Run-walk plans with 4 days per week
  2. Intermediate: 5 days per week with tempo and long-run focus
  3. Advanced: 6 days including speed work, tempo, and 20+ mile long runs

The number one thing that derails marathon training? Injuries in weeks 8–12. Start a simple strength routine NOW:

  • Squats, lunges, and single-leg deadlifts (2x/week)
  • Core work (planks, dead bugs, bird dogs)
  • Hip and glute activation (clamshells, banded walks)

Consistency beats intensity here. Twenty minutes twice a week changes everything.

A group of smiling runners pose together after a race, holding medals, a “GOOD GRIEF” flag, and a large cutout of a woman’s face. Tall buildings and other runners are visible in the background, capturing the energy and camaraderie that follow good time management and careful February planning. Austin’s running community is one of the best in the country. Join a local group run to build accountability and make those early morning miles less lonely. Check the Austin Marathon Instagram Page for group runs and shakeout events leading up to race weekend.

  • Saturday, February 13: Packet Pickup (9 AM–6 PM)
  • Sunday, February 14: Race Day, Wave A starts at 7:00 AM
